UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski Expresses Openness to a Potential Showdown with Ilia Topuria in the Future.
Set to make his highly-anticipated comeback at UFC 290, UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski is scheduled to defend his title against Yair Rodriguez.
This bout marks Volkanovski’s first featherweight title defense in nearly a year, as he previously ventured into the lightweight division in February.
During that time at UFC 284, ‘The Great’ Alexander Volkanovski fell short in his quest for dual-champion status, facing a defeat against Islam Makhachev.
Despite his recent lightweight bout, it appears that Alexander Volkanovski has more in store for the division.
he Australian fighter has been dropping hints in recent weeks, suggesting a possible return to the 155-pound weight class for a range of exciting matchups, including a potential shot at the BMF (Baddest Motherf***er) title.
However, before bidding farewell to the featherweight division, Volkanovski has an important clash with Ilia Topuria on the horizon that demands his attention.
‘Fresh off his triumphant return at UFC Jacksonville, Ilia Topuria, known as ‘El Matador,’ delivered a dominant performance against Josh Emmett.
Following his impressive unanimous decision victory, Topuria wasted no time and expressed his desire for a title shot.
While Alexander Volkanovski currently has his focus on facing ‘El Matador,’ he openly discussed the matchup during a recent episode of the DC and RC podcast.
During the conversation, the Australian fighter expressed his eagerness for the highly-anticipated fight to materialize in the near future.
“Yeah well look again, I think that that’s a great fight and that will work well on some people and won’t work well on others but anyway we’ll move on from that. Again, I want guys, I told you I want to be active, I was at a stage where I was like give me number one guys and we’ve sort of cleared them and we don’t have it so everyone’s raving on about this guy [Topuria], I’ve got Yair to worry about so I’ll worry about that”
He continued, “….Everyone’s raving on about this guy, I’ve got Yair to worry about. I’ll worry about that first ’cause again, I view him as a much bigger threat than Ilia. So I’ll make sure I go out there and handle my business, and then, if that’s on the cards again I want to be active… We’ll see what the UFC says. For me, if people think he’s the next guy, bring it on.”
