Jorge Masvidal is perplexed as to why Colby Covington is being considered for the upcoming title shot.
Dana White, the UFC president, announced that Colby Covington will be the next fighter to compete for the welterweight title shot after Leon Edwards defeated Kamaru Usman in a rematch at UFC 286. This decision has been met with criticism and debate over its merit.
During a press conference leading up to UFC 287, Jorge Masvidal shared his thoughts on Colby Covington’s upcoming title shot and raised concerns about the legality of the fight. Masvidal referred to the brain injury claims made by Covington after their altercation at a Miami restaurant in 2019, which has led to doubts about whether Covington should be allowed to compete for the welterweight belt:
“I currently have three felonies because this bitch Colby says I gave him a brain injury, so how the f**k is he going to fight for any title, is what I want to know,” Masvidal said at UFC 287 media day. “The UFC is going to get sued if that guy goes in there and something like that happens. Because supposedly, allegedly because I didn’t do s**t, he says I gave him a brain injury. I didn’t do s**t to him.”
When asked about the possibility of ‘Chaos’ attending the upcoming event, Jorge Masvidal responded with strong language directed towards Colby Covington. Masvidal expressed his belief that Covington is an attention-seeker and used offensive language to suggest. He said:
“He’s an attention-seeking-ass w***e. He’s going to be there. From 100 feet away and 20 security guards, he’s going to be saying all types of crazy-ass s**t, that he’s the king of this and that. He’s only the king of calling cops and sucking c**k,” Masvidal added.

It’s no secret that there is animosity between Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington, who were once close friends but have since become fierce rivals. The two fighters faced each other at UFC 272 in March of last year, with Covington winning by decision. After the fight, there was an altercation between the two in Miami, which allegedly involved Masvidal physically assaulting Covington. Since then, Masvidal has been vocal about his desire for a rematch with Covington, stating that he wants to defeat him and cause significant physical harm.
Due to this altercation between two in miami , Masvidal faced charges of aggravated battery and criminal mischief, both of which were considered felonies. However, the court dropped a third felony charge related to wearing a mask while committing a felony. Masvidal has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is set to appear for a pre-trial court hearing on May 10 in Miami-Dade County.
Meanwhile Masvidal is scheduled to fight Gilbert Burns at UFC 287, and a victory for either fighter could lead to a title shot opportunity. The main event of the card features a rematch between Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira in the middleweight division
